Welcome to A Single Drop!
We are living in a time when water, a necessity for continued survival on this planet, is at its most vulnerable. Pollution, population growth, privatization, and environmental degradation have stressed the availability and health of this life-giving resource and intensified poverty worldwide. A Single Drop (ASD) helps communities around the world gain access to clean water and sanitation by harnessing local resources, building local leadership capacity, and transferring technical expertise to local people so they can resolve their own water issues using environmentally and financially sustainable practices
Global Water Crisis:
- 1.2 billion people do not have access to freshwater
- 3 to 5 million people die of water related diseases per year
- every 15 seconds a child dies of water related disease
- over half the hospital beds in the world are occupied by people with water related diseases
“The human right to water is indispensable for leading a life in human dignity. It is a pre-requisite for the realization of other human rights.” Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General
“If the wars of the 20th century were fought over oil, the wars of this century will be fought over water.” Ismail Seregeldin, former president of the World Bank
Disparity in Water Use
One flush of a Western toilet uses as much water as the average person in the developing world uses for a whole day’s washing, drinking, cleaning, and cooking.
ASD believes the richest man and the smallest plant are equal in that we all need water to survive. Because water IS life, it is a place where we can all agree and find opportunities for cooperation.
It only takes a single drop of water to start a wave, a single person to initiate change. ASD helps each person become an agent of change for sustainable access to clean water for all.
